Weekday nights in January are sleepy, and in midtown Miami, only a handful of restaurants are open at 10 p.m. For the most part this area is a ghost town.
A man taking his dog for a late-night walk looks bewildered by the sight unfolding outside the Mediterranean restaurant Maü. At the entrance, a large man checks the credentials of anyone trying to walk through, as if he’s guarding the party of the year.
Dozens of people are waiting through security for the party to begin. A boxing heavyweight, a Jamaican dancehall singer, a reality show casting agent and more. There is a three-course menu meal to tease your guests. According to the invitation, dinner starts at 8:00, but no one is eating until the guest of honor arrives.
The man in the face of the night is imprinted in color on the napkin of the table setting, but not many people, beyond the most die-hard of West Memphis hip-hop fans, can probably recognize it. And he’s ready to take over his new home in Miami and around the world.
This hip-hop version of the debutante ball is tossed by mega-successful rapper Moneybagg Yo. gangsta pain,topping Billboard 200 chart. Moneybagg’s label Bread Gang will host a party to officially announce their deal with YTB Fatt. It will also be an opportunity to screen YTB Fatt’s new video “I Told You That”. The video shows 21-year-old Fat carrying a ton of cash, bloodying a diamond necklace, and spitting poetry while tearing someone off-screen to pieces with an axe.
talk to Miami new times, YTB Fat appears more humble and polite in his songs and videos than his rap persona — an almost Southern gentleman sprinkling “sir” on every answer he makes. His recent move to Florida still makes him obsessed with Miami. He moved to Magic City in October with the rest of his Moneybagg Yo entourage.
“I used to watch a lot of YouTube videos of Miami,” he says. “Young Thug and Birdman are often seen on yachts. Miami is just such a place. Every day is something.”
Miami is a world away from West Memphis, located in Arkansas, across the Mississippi River from the city of Tennessee.
“Miami is faster. Memphis is slower. It was easy to get into trouble,” YTB Fat said of his upbringing.
I admit my only knowledge of modern Memphis is from 2005 Hustle & FlowYTB In a flick that came out when Fat was a toddler, he doesn’t hesitate to chime in.
“That movie had a big impact on Memphis,” he says. “People recreate the scene from then to today. The TikTok crowd is obsessed with it.”
YTB Fatt draws his childhood from gritty movies. YTB stands for “Young Truck Boy”. “It comes from the running track. We run the game,” he adds. “My name used to be Fat Boy, from which he took Boy.”
He just started rapping in 2019. Before that, I used to gamble. “Throw the dice,” he explains. “I was addicted. I would have [$3,000] or $4,000 or [$5,000] or $6,000. I was betting on a $100 throw. ”
Now, instead of playing a game of chance, he’s put that dedication into his music career, playing every chance he gets back to Memphis. He built enough of a name and reputation as a performer to catch the attention of Moneybagg Yo. YTB says they try to absorb as much knowledge as possible from their mentors.
“Moneybagg is so locked up. The guy gets a check for $10 million and he still goes to the studio,” he says. “He’s not going anywhere. Everything comes to him, and he’s working in the studio.”
YTB is also rapidly learning how to navigate an industry that can quickly become agitated if one is not careful. “I’m learning how to handle my family,” he says. “What he does with his people, that’s what I do with my family. I scoop everything up. I do what I see from him. The mistakes I made were the I think it’s a lesson.”
Although he’s spent the past few months in Miami, he’s barely seen the city outside of his studio. “I’m not really into restaurants. I just don’t like sitting around,” he says. “Let’s go out once in a while [the strip club] booby trap. we live in a studio ”
According to YTB, all his lyrics come out on the fly, even though he’s been working overtime in the studio. No preparation, no writing. “You know how to plan? You know how to plan? I walk in the studio without a plan. I do what I do.
Spontaneity helps him be productive. “I Told You That” is the first of many songs and videos he plans to release in the near future, and he says he’s working on two completed projects.
“I made an EP of eight songs in one night in the studio. Every song I made had the potential to be my first single. ‘I told you…’ with this , I’m ready to release my next song, I’m going to put out a video every week for seven straight weeks, I’m gonna get this shit done, I got the points to prove it.”
