ATLANTA — Hip-hop artist Young Doro is launching an anti-gun violence initiative aimed at helping Atlanta’s youth. The rapper sat down with 11Alive’s He Neima Abdulahi to talk more about his program “It Still Takes A Village,” a timely community he launched.
Young Doro, who grew up on the west side of Atlanta, spoke about why he wants to bring this initiative to the city’s youth.
“I am a victim of gun violence and my time spent doing nothing is a reminder of unnecessary things. Being a hip-hop rapper makes me feel like I can be the voice that actually bends it.” ” What they know very well. ”
He also said the trend of violence involving young people isn’t unique to Atlanta.Young Dro said it’s a nationwide problem. To address this issue head-on, he took a creative approach to discussing youth violence.
Starting in Atlanta, Young Dro has created tours that bring conversations to cities like Memphis, New Orleans, Chicago, Los Angeles and many more.
“Derived from [the concept] I need a village. I still need a village. And I know this young generation is not living by that,” said Young Dro.
His nonviolent initiative is now backed by South Fulton Mayor Khalid Kamau. As the issue of youth gun violence draws attention, Young Dro hopes to continue its efforts to spark conversations to find solutions.
“The shootout isn’t lame. We’re going to see the kids where they are. We’re going to give them a voice,” Young Dro said. incline.”
