Germantown, Tennessee — A woman in Germantown lost $300 in an apparent Cash App scam.
The victim, who asked not to use his name, described what happened while he was at the Germantown Kroger in Farmington on Saturday.
“Before I walked out, a boy who looked like he was about 12 or 13 was holding a box of candy and asking me how I was rooting for the soccer team,” she said. “And they were trying to raise money. And I didn’t have the cash. And I kind of felt sick, so I told him I didn’t have the cash, and he said his He asked me if I would support his YouTube Football channel.”
When a teenager said she could view a YouTube channel on her phone, she didn’t think twice.
“So I handed him my phone and had him enter his username. Not my brightest decision,” the woman said.
It wasn’t until she left the store that she realized something was wrong.
“Cash App texted your phone when you submitted the payment and it said the payment had been received, so I got the text shortly after I walked in the door. My brain didn’t click and I was like, ‘I haven’t sent money to anyone,’ but about a minute after the interaction. I looked for him, but he was gone.”
She believes the teenager accessed the Cash app while holding her phone and transferred $300.
“I didn’t feel very smart and gave my phone to someone I didn’t know. But he was so young, I handed my phone. I will support you.” Lessons have certainly been learned,” she said.
The woman reportedly went back inside and reported it to a Kroger employee who immediately called the police. We asked the police about the scam and awaiting a reply, but the lady said the police weren’t the only victims she said.
“They took 300 from me and someone else. Police said they took $1,800 from another person,” she said.
“All of the young men involved were allegedly soliciting without Kroger’s knowledge or approval,” Kroger said in a statement. We are working to extract camera footage of the incident.”
Kroger also said this type of solicitation is not allowed at their store.
This victim, on the other hand, is embarrassed after trusting a teenager with her phone, but also discouraged that trying to do something good can have bad consequences. I’m here.
“I hate it when I can’t trust even young children. It’s hard. It’s sad,” she said.
Victim said he intends to turn on Cash App’s security features.
