WISCONSIN — The James Beard Awards have announced their 2023 semifinalists, and Wisconsin once again has a strong presence among the nominees.
On Wednesday, the James Beard Foundation announced the semi-finalists for its annual Restaurant and Chef Awards, with Wisconsin chefs and restaurants in a total of six categories.
These are Wisconsin’s nominees for the 2023 awards.
Outstanding restaurateur
- Amy and Jason Kerstein, Joe Muench and Dan Snider of Black Shoe Hospitality in Milwaukee (Story Hill BKC and Buttermint Finer Dining & Cocktails)

- Jamie Hoang of Ahan in Madison, Wisconsin.
best new restaurant

- Andrew Hutchison of Madison Sourdough in Madison, Wisconsin.
Chef of the Year: Midwest
- EsterEv’s Dan Jacobs and Dan Van Ceremony in Milwaukee
- Gregory Leon as Amilinda of Milwaukee
- Francesco Mangano of Osteria Papavero in Madison, Wisconsin.
- Ital Nagano and Andrew Krueger of Fairchild in Madison, Wisconsin.
Finalists will be announced on March 29th, and winners will be celebrated on June 5th at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards Ceremony in Chicago.
Last year, Dane Baldwin, chef and owner of The Diplomat in Milwaukee, was named Best Chef in the Midwest.
