WISCONSIN — According to International Labor Organization estimates released in 2017, there were approximately 24.9 million victims of human trafficking in 2016.
According to recent legal data from the National Institute for Trafficking in Persons, new human trafficking cases will be filed in federal courts across the country in 2021, resulting in 449 victims. This is down 25% from the 2020 data. The total number of new criminal cases of human trafficking in the federal court system also decreased by 22% from 2020.
Wisconsin saw seven new human trafficking criminal cases in federal court in 2021, up from six in 2020.
However, these figures represent only those incorporated into the legal system.
