Madison, Wisconsin (AP) — Republicans who control the Wisconsin legislature are moving toward legalizing medical marijuana after years of efforts to loosen state law, the state says. Senate Republican leaders said Thursday.
Senate Majority Leader Devin Lemmahue told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He said bills to create medical marijuana programs in the state would pass this Congress as long as regulations were put in place to ensure they were for people in serious pain. I believe it is possible.
“Our caucus is pretty close to medical marijuana,” LeMahieu told the newspaper.
LeMahieu’s comments are the first time a Senate Republican leader has shown support for the idea. Opposition within the caucuses has been a major hurdle to the proposal so far.
Congress Speaker Robin Voss has shown support for legalizing medical marijuana in recent years. A spokesperson for Voss did not immediately disclose whether Republicans in Congress were participating.
Democrats, including Gov. Tony Evers, have long called for medical and recreational marijuana to be legalized in Wisconsin.
According to an October poll by the Marquette University Law School, 64% of Wisconsins support legalizing marijuana use. According to a 2019 poll, more than 80% of Wisconsins support the idea of a medical marijuana program.
