Madison, Wisconsin (AP) — Wisconsin adds Paul Haynes, Colin Hitchler and Greg Scruggs to new coach Luke Fickel’s defensive staff.
Haynes will be the cornerback coach, while Scruggs will be the defensive line coach. Hitchler directs security and leads the Special Teams forces.
“I’m really excited to add Paul, Colin and Greg,” Fickel said in a statement Thursday. People, they really care about their relationships with their players and work hard to help them grow on and off the field.”
Fickel had already named Mike Tressel as defensive coordinator.
Haynes has been Minnesota’s cornerback coach for the last three seasons and will serve as co-defensive coordinator for the Gophers in 2022. From 2013 he was the head coach at Kent State University until 2017 with a record of 14 wins and 45 losses.
Haynes was Ohio State’s secondary coach from 2005 to 2011 and co-defensive coordinator in 2011 while Fickel was the Buckeyes’ interim head coach. He also served as Michigan State’s defensive back coach in 2018-19, when Tressel was the Spartans’ defensive coordinator.
Hitchler joined Fickel’s Cincinnati staff as a quality control coach in 2018 and served as the Bearcats’ safety coach in 2020-22. He also coached safety in South Alabama.
Scruggs was the New York Jets’ assistant defensive line coach this season. He has been Cincinnati’s director of player development since 2018-19 and defensive line coach since 2020-21.
