WISCONSIN — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has announced a Free Fishing Weekend on January 21st and 22nd.
Wisconsin DNR says anyone can fish where there is an open season. However, you cannot fish in the Sprint Trout Pond during the Free Fishing Weekend.
“Free Fishing Weekends are a great opportunity for people from all walks of life to try fishing without the additional steps and costs of obtaining a fishing license,” says Theresa Stabo, DNR Angler Outreach Program Specialist. says. “Fishing is not just about catch. Get out and enjoy nature, spend time with friends and family, and if you’re lucky, take some fish home with you and have fried fish at your next home.”
Officials said all other fishing regulations still apply, including limits on the number and size of fish anglers can keep. The Wisconsin DNR recommends that anglers review safe eating guidelines if planning to keep fish.
Wisconsin DNR also reminded residents of the following safety tips while fishing in the winter.
- No ice is 100% safe. Anglers can check with their local bait shop about ice conditions in the area they plan to fish.When in doubt, stay on shore
- Wear warm, water-resistant layers
- Wear sturdy boots that are waterproof and have spike-style creepers for the best traction.
- Bring extra hats, gloves, rescue throw ropes and gloves
