Milwaukee — Several people were killed and many lost power after a storm drenched California.
President Joe Biden on Monday issued a state of emergency to support relief efforts in the state.
Some 50 people from WE Energies and Wisconsin Public Service are among those providing support. I left Wisconsin on Saturday, January 7th and traveled across the country to help tens of thousands of people who lost power in a storm.
The crew said it had begun restoration work on Wednesday.
Amy Plato was one of those who went to help Californians. She is the area manager for WE Energies.
“Here at We Energies and WPS we are a very close family and we want to help. We are very proud to be able to help our customers,” Plato said.
Platon said it could take at least two weeks to restore power to those affected. They support the local energy crew of Pacific Gas and Electric.
“PG&E employees are exhausted. We are here to at least help them rest. We have a good group here – we get some work done.” I will,” added Plato.
WPS and We Energies aren’t the only crews supported. Many came from all over the country to help residents get the lights back on.
Plato said the response from residents has been positive.
“People are excited that we are here. They want power back,” said Plato. “It’s really nice that we are welcomed with open arms.”
This isn’t the first time We Energies and WPS have provided assistance to other states. In 2018, Hurricane He sent a crew to Puerto Rico for two months to help rebuild the power grid after Maria.
