LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (AP) — Former politicians and political pundits in western Wisconsin don’t just talk, they put their money into the election.
The group, which calls itself the Task Force on Election Prediction, has been meeting in the La Crosse area for nearly 50 years to bet $5 on local, state, and national elections, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.
The eight members include former Lacrosse Mayor and State Representative John Medinger, former State Senate Speaker Brian Roode, and Joe Hemme, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Walter Baltz of West Salem is the Commission’s last living founder. He said he formed the committee after getting tired of arguing with people over politics.
“The only way to get people to be honest about it is to put money into it,” he said.
Members meet and place bets each spring and fall before elections. Medinger said politics might become more civilized if people with different points of view sat and talked like committees.
“We’re here to be honest about this group, so when you go through the list of people running for this election, sometimes you end up picking people you don’t even like at all. I’m going to win,” Medinger said.
