HERMAN, Wisconsin (AP) — The company that operates a wind farm in southern Wisconsin is investigating what caused part of a wind turbine and its blades to fall to the ground, scattering debris across a field.
No one was injured when the blades and top of a wind turbine collapsed Wednesday night in Dodge County, near the town of Harman.
According to the National Weather Service, the turbine is part of the Butler Ridge Wind Farm and stands about 400 feet above the ground.
Mark Dietrich, whose father owns the land where the collapse occurred, told WISN-TV that a nearby resident said when it collapsed, “We both heard it and our house shook.”
Dietrich said he was pleased that no one was hurt, although there was a large amount of debris on the ground and a large impact crater.
“It’s a lot of weight loss at once. It left quite a crater,” he said.
NextEra Energy Resources owns the turbine. In a statement, the company said it believed “this is an isolated incident as turbine malfunctions are rare.”
The company said it was working to “identify the cause of the turbine failure and evaluate other turbines in the field as a quality control measure.”
