Senator Phil Berger said he believes there will be enough support at the General Assembly to legalize online sports betting in North Carolina in 2023.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina legislators hope for a “new effort” to legalize online sports betting in 2023.
North Carolina Senate Speaker and Republican pro Phil Burger said during an appearance in Charlotte on Monday that he believes there is enough support to bring online betting to North Carolina. The state Senate passed a bill last summer, but it was defeated by the House of Representatives over concerns that sanctioning sports betting would create addiction and increase theft, embezzlement and debt.

Berger hopes the new bill will start in the House and now make its way to the Senate. He also hinted that those interested in gambling would find other means of betting on sports.
“I believe we have a majority in both chambers,” Berger said. “It’s something the whole public stands for. If you have a phone, you already have access to it. You shouldn’t, but the phone is there.”
Sports gambling became popular in the state following a 2018 US Supreme Court ruling. According to the American Gaming Association, 20 states, including Virginia and Tennessee, and the District of Columbia now offer mobile sports betting, while 28 states and Washington, D.C., have some form of face-to-face wagering. . The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians began local gaming operations last year at his two casinos in western North Carolina, thanks to an earlier law.
North Carolina is currently an untapped market for sports betting with several major league sports franchises, including the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, NASCAR, and college sports.
“I think the outlook is pretty good,” Berger said. “We just have to see.”
