Many mobile apps have emerged that claim to be on par with ChatGPT, if not better. But you shouldn’t download them. Here’s why.
The arrival of ChatGPT is one of the most disruptive events in the tech world these days. At one point everyone is talking about Web 3.0 and the possibilities of the Metaverse. The next moment we are all in awe of the power of ChatGPT.
Unfortunately, as with most new technologies, there is a tendency for a lot of fakes to emerge.Taking advantage of ChatGPT’s popularity, many app developers are pushing fake ChatGPT apps to app stores. Here are some reasons why you shouldn’t download the ChatGPT mobile app now.
Fake ChatGPT apps flood app stores
There has been a huge explosion of AI chatbot apps recently on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Most of it only appeared shortly after his ChatGPT was released in Q4 of 2022. Normally this is not a problem. Who doesn’t like AI chatbots?
Unfortunately, most of these apps mislead users by pretending to be official ChatGPT mobile apps. Some even go so far as to flee unsuspecting users by offering premium versions that claim to be better than what ChatGPT can do.
As of January 2023, OpenAI does not have a publicly available premium ChatGPT service. Any app that claims to offer such is a scam.
I have tried dozens of so called ChatGPT apps on Play Store and App Store. As for what worked, none could offer anything significantly different than what the browser-based version of ChatGPT offers. Most of them couldn’t even get past the authentication screen.
The reason is simple. OpenAI does not have an official ChatGPT mobile app. Any app that pretends to be fake is fake.
Are there any legitimate ChatGPT apps by 3rd party developers?
OpenAI does not have an official ChatGPT app, but it is technically possible for third-party developers to create apps using the same technology that runs ChatGPT.
There are many legitimate mobile apps that use OpenAI’s GPT-3 API. This allows you to answer questions and perform tasks similar to ChatGPT.
However, unlike ChatGPT, these apps are not as powerful or efficient as ChatGPT. There is a GPT-3 API, but OpenAI does not have an official API for ChatGPT.
The ChatGPT API (Application Programming Interface) is a way for app developers to build apps that interact directly with ChatGPT to achieve similar results in their applications. There is currently no such API, so there is no “ethical” way for developers to build mobile apps powered by ChatGPT.
Beware of fake ChatGPT apps
As a rule of thumb, avoid apps that use the OpenAI logo, claim to be ChatGPT, or offer premium access.
It is unclear if OpenAI will consider building a mobile app for ChatGPT in the future. Until you choose to do so, don’t fall prey to malicious actors hawking fake ChatGPT apps.
The best way to access ChatGPT today is through your browser on both PC and mobile.
