The owners of Who’s on Third Downtown plan to open a similar sports bar on the south side called Who’s on Layton, with an additional seasonal patio.
Bobby Wiltgen of Cream City Concepts, which owns Who’s on Third, Third Street Tavern and Oak Barrel Public House, said he expects Who’s on Layton to open on the third floor in late spring or early summer. 512 W. Leighton Ave.
Cream City Concepts purchased the building in early January. Beer Belly’s closed in December 2019 after owner Ralph DiChristopher fell ill and the building was sold. It was then sold again with plans for Kelly’s dugout, but those plans fell through.
Wirtgen said the building will be remodeled to resemble Who’s on Third at 1007 N. King Drive (known as Old World Third Street when the sports bar opened). He said it will have 14 to 18 TVs showing sports and a neighborhood bar feel.

A 700-square-foot seasonal patio with heating and cooling will be added, Wirtgen said, along with garage doors to allow air to flow freely inside the bar during the warmer months. The City of Milwaukee is considering these proposed structural changes.
There are also plans to install a giant video wall outside. Wirtgen said he may add a beer garden to the back of the building next year.
The bar will definitely serve fried fish on Fridays, he added, and its menu could consist of “fan favorites” from its downtown sister location. He pointed out that it’s not as big as Who’s on Third in .
Who’s on Layton seats about 100 people, including 30 in the U-shaped bar and 30-40 on the patio.
“We’re thrilled to bring that concept out there,” Wirtgen said. “My mode has always been to create a neighborhood bar downtown. It’s exciting to actually have a neighborhood bar in your neighborhood.”
He said the location in the Garden District, also known as Milwaukee’s Green Corridor, is appealing because of the beauty of the vegetation there. It was also in a high-traffic area near the airport within walking distance of three hotels, he observed.
Wirtgen pointed out that the late owner of Beer Belly’s, DiChristopher, once owned a bar called Who’s on First, at First and Greenfield.
“It’s full circle,” he said, with the bar now called Leighton’s Who’s. “It’s exciting to pay tribute to the previous owner.”
Jack Roman, Wiltgen’s business partner at Third Street Tavern, is also a partner at Who’s on Layton.
