East Chicago, Indiana (WLS) — Instead of extra patrols, the East Chicago, Indiana, police department hopes to reduce street crime with a sophisticated phone app.
“We want the public to feel safe talking to us and trust that we will not release information,” said Chicago Eastern Police Chief Jose Rivera.
Rivera said his department now hopes to use the app Atlas One to build bridges while keeping residents safe, all in real time. East He Chicago is the first city in Indiana to use this app.
“Instead of looking at a police car and knowing what’s going on, you can actually tell them what they need to know, like there’s been a shooting, there’s been a robbery, there’s been a possible murder. Something happened in the area where they live,” Rivera said.
The app’s technology allows the ECPD to send location-based push alerts to residents in the event of an incident to notify particularly affected residents. without causing panic throughout the city.
“What we did was a six-block radius, and depending on the severity of the crime, we could go further away,” Rivera said. You can look at your phone in between to see if any hints come in.”
These key tips can be sent directly from the user’s phone using the app, so all witnesses can anonymously send photos and videos to the department.
“You can talk to the police or address your concerns without anyone knowing, and that’s how we keep our streets and neighborhoods safe,” Rivera said. .
Atlas One was already fully utilized in East Chicago within hours of launch after a shot was fired in the neighborhood.
“No one was hit and no property was damaged, but we immediately notified residents of the area,” Rivera said.
Rivera said he hopes the majority of downloads in East Chicago will download Atlas One to help improve public safety. Starting Tuesday, he and his officers will visit various neighborhoods and businesses in East Chicago to educate residents about the app and encourage them to download it.
