WESTHAMPTON, NY — High school students in Westhampton Beach scored high marks with their new winning app.
Rowan Tiska, a Westhampton Beach High School senior, was named first in the Congressional App Challenge alongside his teammates from California. His team is now participating in a #HouseofCode event in Washington, DC, where they have the opportunity to demonstrate the application to members of Congress, the district said.
Tiska and his teammates created the app through the Applied Computing Foundation. The Applied Computing Foundation connects students and gives them the opportunity to virtually tackle programming-related challenges and submit to competitions, officials explained.
Tiska and his team created an app called Berrie Basket after learning they all lived in a farm community.
The goal was to develop an app to help farmers sell their produce online. Students have been collaborating on the app for over six months, meeting virtually every weekend. They are now looking forward to submitting to other competitions around the country.
Apart from her interest in programming, Tiska is a member of the school’s French club and student council. According to the school district, he plans to study computer engineering or computer science at college.
