Waverly Labs, the company behind translation-focused wearables, has launched an app called Forum to help users translate and transcribe speech in real time. The company says the solution will benefit lecturers, auditoriums and theaters. Plus, it’s compatible with video calling apps like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet.
Forums are available on iOS and can be accessed from your browser. His Android version of the app will be released by the end of this quarter. It supports 20 languages and 42 dialects including Arabic, Dutch, English, Hindi, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. A user can join an existing session or create a session and share her QR code with others.
Users can switch to a new language in the middle of a session and receive text and speech translations. There’s also a profanity filter that blocks words that users don’t want to see in chat.

The app is free to use when joining sessions, but is limited to hosting 5 person sessions with 40 minutes of interpretation each month. Free Tier users can download unlimited transcripts. A paid plan of $7.99 per month increases the time limit and allows you to add custom vocabulary to improve your translation.
Organizations such as Japanese apparel company Uniqlo and French luxury brand Chanel are already using forums for face-to-face and online meetings with multinational teams. It’s also been used by the Broadway show The Perfect Crime to provide real-time translations for international visitors.
