Watertown, NY (WWNY) – The NFL season may be over, but the Reds and Blacks of Watertown are already gearing up for the upcoming 2023 season.
Coach George Ashcraft began signing up prospective players for next season at 10-1 on Saturday at the team office at the Fakeney Street Business Complex.
A week later, Ashcraft has nearly a dozen ready to wear this season’s outfits, and players are eager to get things started, he says.
“The attitude is great. We got 10 guys from last year’s team that played and signed up. Young boys, like 20, 6-foot-4, 175 pounds, wide receivers,” Ashcraft said.
Ashcraft said the team will begin outdoor practice in mid-April or early May, depending on the weather, and has some advice for new and returning players planning to play football in red and black this season. I will add one.
“Your best friend will be the gym. If you want to be a football player or an influencer, to get in there and work out. You have to be in shape. We only practice two nights a week, two hours a night, so any occasional workout before the season will pay off,” says Ashcraft.
Red and Black are chasing a third consecutive title this season, and Ashcraft feels the pieces are in place for the team to add another piece of hardware to their trophy case.
“So far everything is 100% positive. That’s what you have to have and what people are always striving to get on the same sheet of music. I think that’s where we stand because we’re saying, “If the attitude goes like that, I think we’ll be fine,” Ashcraft said.
For red and black, the idea for 2023 is to reload and run the table again in 2023.
