Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (DN.Y.) and several other Democratic leaders are scheduled to speak to reporters Thursday morning. That was after Democratic lawmakers asked the Federal Trade Commission to open an investigation into the marketing of the “JR-15” rifle.
Schumer called for the Federal Trade Commission to get involved after a shooting killed 10 people in Los Angeles celebrating Lunar New Year in a ballroom on Saturday night.
The federal government should look into how rifles are “madly marketed to children,” the majority leader said Sunday.
Schumer also called Wee 1 Tactical on the JR-15 weapon, which resembles the infamous AR-15-style assault rifle in mass shootings across the country.
“Miniaturizing deadly weapons of war and selling them to young children is the last thing we want to do,” Schumer said in a statement.
The .22-caliber gun’s “small, lightweight, rugged polymer construction and ergonomics are for smaller hobbyists,” Wee 1 boasts on its website.
The event is scheduled to start at 11:30 AM ET.
