WAKESHA, WI — The Humane Society of Waukesha relies on volunteers to care for its animals. For one volunteer, it’s a passion he’s cultivated for over 20 years.
Animal-loving HAWS volunteer Dottie Hrenak has been with cats for nearly 30 years, wanting to make an impact before they find new homes.
“I love it. Volunteering has been my life,” said Hrenak.

Cat-cuddling, she comes every week to interact with cats waiting to be adopted. She can pet them, snuggle with them, and let their personalities shine outside the cage.
“I feel like I gave the cats here everything I have for two hours. I leave feeling good,” Frenac said.
She said that feeling has kept her coming back all these years.
For HAWS Volunteer Coordinator Devon Kirkpatrick, having someone as dedicated as Hrenak is very special to their organization.
“Dottie has had a wonderful, huge impact, not just on the animals, but on our staff and fellow volunteers. Hearing Dottie’s voice on Wednesday mornings puts a smile on their face,” Kirkpatrick said. .
Hrenak started volunteering at a young age and continues to volunteer at nursing homes, hospices and even HAWS.
Now in her 80s, she said she wasn’t going to slow down.

“You can have all the money in the world, but money can’t buy happiness. I think everyone should volunteer,” said Hrenak.
She has been attending weekly for nearly 30 years and is one of HAWS’ longest-serving volunteers.
She said it means a lot to her and to the people she influences.
