Madison, Wisconsin — The COVID-19 pandemic has brought some lasting changes to the higher education system.
For students at Madison University, these changes come in the form of virtual reality learning.
William Ballo is an EMS Educator at Madison College. When the pandemic hit in 2020, he knew his students would struggle, so he came up with a solution.
“When the pandemic hit, [students] They lost time in the clinical environment, so they couldn’t go to the clinic, they couldn’t go out and see patients, they couldn’t see patients with respiratory diseases.

By using virtual reality, students were able to access learning they missed due to the pandemic.
“So what this does is you get a patient who is placed in an environment and looks more realistic,” says Ballo.
Emergency responders are trained to deal with things like heart attacks, but you don’t encounter a heart attack until someone’s life is at stake. But Baro said virtual reality can change that.
“So what this does is you get a patient who is placed in an environment and looks more realistic,” says Ballo. “So you can make mistakes. You could do something wrong and try again. We can go back and talk about it and try again. We can do it in the field. and people will die.”
Madison College is currently building an augmented reality center that will house 12 different VR stations. The XR Center can help teach classes ranging from dentistry to respiratory therapy to even growing plants on the moon.
There is no exact date when the XR Center will be available. After completion, the university plans to open the center not only to students but also to the general public.
