The world’s first artificial gravity space station is built in Long Beach. Vast Space has announced that it is moving its headquarters to Long Beach, joining the thriving space economy.
Mayor Rex Richardson said in his first city address Tuesday night announcing Vast as the city’s newest space company, “Every day, new companies choose Long Beach as their primary business location.
Founded in Berkeley in 2021, Vast is developing a 100-meter-long space station that can accommodate more than 40 people, according to its website. The station rotates to provide artificial earth gravity. This will mitigate physical deterioration during long manned spaceflights.
The station also provides various microgravity environments such as Mars, Moon and asteroid analogues required for many space-based activities such as manufacturing.
Vast is in the early stages of designing its space station and plans to launch a large-scale demo module within the next three to four years, Vast chief legal officer Krystle Caponio told the Business Journal Tuesday night. told to
The company will move out of its 7,000-square-foot facility in El Segundo, shortly after its establishment, into two buildings in a newly constructed industrial park on the corner of Spring Street and Orange Avenue. Caponio said the total building area is about 115,000 square feet, and the move and set-up are expected to be completed during the first quarter of this year.
The company plans to expand its workforce from about 40 to 700 by the end of 2027, so it will need to expand drilling. Kyle Dedmon, vice president of facilities, said at the mayor’s event.
In the future, when the first astronauts board the vast space station, Dedmon hopes the residents of Long Beach will feel as proud as the company.
“We couldn’t be more excited that Long Beach will be our new home,” Dedmon said. “Projects like this are only really possible in Long Beach with a pipeline of talent, an ecosystem of startups, transportation and infrastructure, and other initiatives.”
