LA CROSS, Wisconsin — The new 144,000-square-foot fieldhouse at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is scheduled to open on January 23, 2023, officials announced last week. It will open at the beginning of the spring semester.
The Fieldhouse project originally broke ground just east of Roger Harring Stadium in August 2020. University officials say the project will help the university “keep pace with the continued growth of its on-campus exercise and recreation programs” and “grow its athletic and sports science departments.”
It also helps free up Mitchell Hall and create more educational space.
The school’s men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams had a soft opening in December and were already getting a glimpse of the space. That opening allowed the team to practice on his 200-meter NCAA competition indoor track at the facility.
Open to athletes and employees, the facility allows for a variety of activities, including student recreation and indoor athletics.
This space includes an infield for all sports, a walking and jogging track on the second level of the track, 1,500 spectator spaces, office suites, a 2,600 total square foot soccer field support building, and room for teams. There is also Meetings, changing rooms for men and women, showers, etc.
At certain times, employees can also use the space for open runs and walks, officials said. Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 7:45 am and from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
The projected budget for the UWL Sports project was just under $50 million.
