Female Athlete of the Year: Kate Douglas (Swim and Dive)
This spring, the UVA Swim and Dive program won the national title for the second year in a row. Douglas had achieved fame in her own right, including being awarded the CSCAA Female Swimmer of the Year and her ACC Scholar of the Year. She won her first gold medal in her 200 m in December and set her 2:02.12, the second fastest in her swimming history.

Dominant Defender: Reese Beekman (Men’s Basketball)
With Tony Bennett’s program known for his dominant defense, Beekman was on another level in 2022. He plays his opponent’s best backcourt players night after night, often well below his season average. Since January 1, 2022, Beekman has led the ACC in steals percentage and on the 6’2″ block percentage leaderboard he is the only player under 6’6″!

Rookie of the Year: Camryn Taylor (Women’s Basketball)
After moving from Marquette for the 2021-22 basketball season, Taylor has led the Cavaliers in scoring both seasons. She is deadly in midrange, attacking the basket and providing a steady presence in the interior. release the

Graduate of the Year: Daniel Collins (Women’s Tennis)
Collins became the number one ranked American female tennis player after reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open. She also defeated two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka to reach the round of 16.
Honorable Mention: De’Andre Hunter (Men’s Basketball), Malcolm Brogdon (Men’s Basketball)
Coach of the Year: Amaka “Mox” Agugua-Hamilton (Women’s Basketball)
Virginia has just five wins in the 2021-22 college basketball season. Coach Mox had an impressive run at Missouri State after Tina Thompson was fired, making his last two tournament appearances in his season and finishing in the Sweet Sixteen after finishing that season. I got a job. Thanks to her efforts in her transfer portal, she soon turned the situation around dramatically. The Cavaliers started her 2022-23 season with her 12-1 record, and fanbase excitement was ritually revived.

Moment of the Year: Reese Beekman takes Corner 3 in the final seconds to beat Duke
The ball started in Kihei Clark’s hand, much like the UVA men’s basketball team’s crisis of the past few years. After being tightly guarded by Duke’s Paolo Banchero, a defensive breakdown sent Beekman wide off the inbounds play. He was 0-3 over the arc that night, but he didn’t miss the moment. Beekman drilled down the shot, silencing Cameron Indoors in the process. The 2021-22 season ended up being a disappointing season for Tony Bennett’s group, but defeating #7 Blue his Devils in such fashion was a signature moment.

Highlight Reel Play of the Year: Ryan Dunn’s Transition Dunk vs. JMU
Ryan Dunn is the newest member of the UVA Men’s Basketball Team, bringing pure excitement to the JPJ crowd. In early December, Dunn unleashed a Posterize his slam on James Madison’s defender, earning him first place in the SportCenter Top 10 Plays. Hoos he went on to win 55-50.

Video Game Box Score: Jake Gelof Hits for the Cycle vs Cornell
In a 19-1 win over Cornell early in the season, Virginia Baseball’s Jake Gerof became the first player in show history to hit for the cycle. It capped off an incredible weekend, where he went 7/8 with his 3 homers and his 13 RBIs.
Honorable Mention: Kihei Clarke 25 points (6 3 points)/7 assists/6 rebounds vs. Duke, Mia McLean 22 points/17 rebounds vs. William and Mary
Quote of the Year: Tony Bennett
“People are hiring a lot of negative people against us. If they can win as much as we do and they can produce as many people in the NBA, talk about it. If you can’t do that, it’s probably best to focus on yourself.”
Tony Bennett is the classiest, most down-to-earth guy you’ll ever meet in the college basketball industry. So UVA’s fans appreciated it even more when he decided to show his salty side in a pre-season interview with Jamie Shaw. And, as always, Bennett was spot on.
Courage Award: Mike Hollins
Mike Hollins is a hero. His willingness to risk his life for others in moments of terror is indescribably impressive and something we can all learn from. For the bravery he has gone through his recovery and rehab, both physically and mentally, he deserves to be recognized not only as a brave man, but as someone we all can look up to and admire.
As we ring in the new year, keeping Ravel Davis Jr., DeShawn Perry, Devin Chandler, and their loved ones in our hearts remains our top priority. And as Charlottesville and the UVA community continue to recover, along with our lost loved ones, we are there to support Hollins and the rest of the survivors from that horrific night. Keeping up is equally important.
