COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A Sandy man was charged Thursday with repeatedly sexually assaulting a woman he met on a dating app.
Samuel Whitney Faber, 42, was indicted in Third District Court on three counts of aggravated sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping, and first-degree felony. 2 counts of forced sexual abuse, 2nd degree felony. Aggravated assault, third degree felony.
One woman says she met Faber on the Mutual dating app in March. She agreed to meet him at a restaurant.
“As the night wore on,[the woman]said Faber was asking some strange questions, such as whether he had a concealed weapons permit,” according to the indictment.
She said Faber took a gun out of his pocket and showed her that he had one. He also asked the woman if her family knew her whereabouts. When she replied that her family could follow her thanks to an app on her phone, Faber commented:[The woman]said Faber was joking,” the indictment states.
The woman agreed to return to Faber’s house with him, but told him several times, “She’s not going to do anything.” According to the indictment, while at his home, Faber pulled out the gun again, showed it to the woman, loaded her bullets, and then put his gun back in his pocket.
Faber allegedly touched the woman inappropriately in and out of the house and asked her to take her back to the car. She said she stopped at a building in an industrial area.
“Faver asked[the woman]if she was sure she didn’t want to do anything, and she replied that she wouldn’t do that on a first date. Faber told the woman, ‘She can do it. Or he can get her to do it,” then sexually assaulted him, again referring to his gun.
“The victim made it clear that he was scared because he knew the defendant had a gun. has been made clear,” the indictment said.
According to the indictment, Faber took the woman back to her car and said, “Thank you for the wonderful night, tell her to call me tomorrow and let her know she’s home safely.” I drove to the hospital for a physical assault check.
When questioned by police, Faber told detectives that he “likes to push boundaries,” the charges state.
The Mutual app is designed as a dating platform for single men and women who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But some worry that dating apps aimed at religious groups are giving victims a false sense of security.
