The game got off to a quick start, but the United States and Colombia closed out January camp with a 0-0 draw. Missed chances for both sides were the name of the game as Paul Ariola’s 50th national cap was not celebrated with a win. Paxten Aaronsson had some good chances in his national team debut. Following in his brother Brenden’s footsteps, he became the eighth pair of brothers to win a national team senior cap. Couldn’t finish…his chance.
Columbia pulled away from the USMNT defense, aided by the experience of Aaron Long and Walker Zimmerman, neither of whom looked comfortable. Matthew Hoppe got off to a top start in the United States and his performances summed up the overall level of the team very well. He was in space all the time, but he didn’t manage to get the last ball in, so it was a disappointing result.
Ending a camp without a win is never a good thing, but with interim manager Anthony Hudson putting this roster together late and with so many lineup changes, growing pains were to be expected. There is play and players like Aaronson and John Tolkien will benefit from these games, but the USMNT still has a long way to go to build depth behind the first team.
