(Latest blackout incident, update with added background)
Jan 25 (Reuters) – Meta Platforms Inc’s social media app went down Wednesday with thousands of users in the United States, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.
According to Downdetector.com, more than 18,000 Instagram users reported problems accessing the app, and about 13,000 incidents were reported on the Facebook app. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger outage reports also spiked, according to data from Downdetector.com.
Downdetector tracks outages by collating status reports from multiple sources, including user-submitted errors on the platform.
Big tech platform outages are not uncommon. Several companies, from Google to Microsoft, have experienced service interruptions.
Microsoft suffered a network outage early Wednesday that brought its cloud platform Azure down along with services like Teams and Outlook, affecting millions of users around the world.
Meta did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment. (Reporting by Akriti Sharma of her in Bangalore; Editing by Subhranshu Sahu)
