Scammers wasted no time capitalizing on the sudden popularity of AI chatbots. ChatGPT, tricked into the app store and flooded.
In less than a month, an avalanche of non-OpenAI-affiliated mobile apps appeared on both the App Store and Play Store, promising to pay for ChatGPT features.
These new apps charge around £9.99 per week for subscriptions.
However, ChatGPT is a completely free browser-based tool developed by OpenAI. Other than avoiding short wait times in virtual queues to access, these apps offer no additional functionality other than providing an interface to access AI tools on your smartphone.
The most popular of them is an app called “ChatGPT Chat GPT AI With GPT-3” which is currently #1 in the UK App Store for top free productivity apps according to Similarweb.
It was published by a company called ‘Social Media Apps & Games GmbH’ and the link to their website doesn’t seem to lead anywhere currently.
According to Gizmodo, the website encouraged visitors to “experience the power of AI from your phone!” While the “Try ChatBot GPT Now” chance pop-up window instructs the user to download the app.
This shady app has taken the top spot, surpassing apps like Gmail and Google Docs. It also uses his OpenAI logo, a name clearly intended to appear in searches for “ChatGPT”.
It’s not the only app that charges for using the free ChatGPT tool available for free.
Another app called “Wiz AI Chat Bot Writing Helper” ranks on Apple’s list of top productivity apps.
Basically, you can use OpenAI’s ChatGPT-3 engine to code, write creative sentences, write recipes, and even tweet for a £9.99 weekly subscription.
It looks like Open AI as there is a clear demand for an official mobile app teeth An official smartphone app is under development.
The company is working on an iOS app powered by ChatGPT, according to a LinkedIn post claiming that venture capitalist and podcaster Jason Karakanis has been given access to the beta.
Until it’s available, you’ll have to stick to the web browser version to use ChatGPT, or pay a few pounds for one of the many mock ChatGPT apps to use on your smartphone.
OpenAI is keeping the tool free for now, but the computational cost of the powerful tool is ‘staggering’ and should be ‘monetized at some point,’ says CEO Sam Altman As hinted at, this is likely to change.
OpenAI recently set up a waiting list for an “experimental” paid version of ChatGPT that can provide faster answers.
