BARRON, Wisconsin (AP) — A Wisconsin college wrestling team escaped injury after a bus caught fire on their way home from a convention in Minnesota.
Officials at the Milwaukee School of Engineering said the school’s wrestling team caught fire on Saturday while en route from a competition in Itasca, Minnesota. KARE-TV reported on Monday that a bus caught fire around 8 p.m. on his US Highway 53 near Cameron in Barron County.
The driver stopped and everyone was able to get out of the car. MSOE Athletic Director Brian Miller said in a statement that no one was injured.
“We are very grateful that all the players and coaching staff were able to get out of their vehicles safely and no one was injured. It’s been a long night,” Miller said in a statement.
A spokesman for bus company Accutrans Group said an investigation into the cause of the fire was ongoing.
The team members were taken to the sheriff’s office to warm up and have a snack while they waited for a replacement bus, according to the Barron County Sheriff’s Department. Parents of team members said some wrestlers had to evacuate the bus without shoes or coats. , was destroyed in a fire.
In a statement, MSOE said it exchanged college-issued items such as textbooks, school-issued laptops, and school ID badges. However, the school noted that student-athletes may need help replacing personal items. Wrestling teams will utilize the Student Persistence Fund to exchange needed items.
The team postponed the January 11 game against Concordia Wisconsin to January 14. Originally scheduled as his match home to the MSOE Raiders, the game will be held at the Al He Hancane Invitational in Elmhurst, Illinois.
