‘Business of Heritage Foods’ series supports local food entrepreneurs
University of Arizona Forge (Find opportunities and resources to grow entrepreneurs) recently announced new Tucson City of Gastronomy (TCoG) Speaker series, “Heritage Food Business”. It takes place every Thursday from 9-10am at FORGE, Roy Place, 44 N. Stone Ave.
Part of the “Thursdays at FORGE” event series, the monthly series is free to attend and provides resources for building and maintaining a food-based business in Southern Arizona.
“Tucson City of Gastronomy has many tools to support food-based businesses that utilize traditional foods. Jonathan Mabry, Executive Director of TCoG. “We work to raise awareness about our traditional foods, including Southern Arizona ingredients, dishes, and foods that contribute to a sense of place through their unique tastes and connection to tradition.”
“We also support local food businesses and start-ups that focus on location-based food,” said Mabry. “We have developed a certification program for food entrepreneurs, a resource guide for identifying traditional food ingredients and products, and a resource guide that allows the community to speak directly to experts working with these products. I have a series of speakers.”

Jonathan Mabry will host the first event on Thursday, January 12th to showcase TCoG resources for food entrepreneurs. Founder and owner of Cheri’s Desert Harvest, Cheri Romanoskialso describes how they used the desert prickly pear to create an international business.

“Food entrepreneurs are essential to creating a strong sense of community. We want to make as many tools available to these entrepreneurs as possible to help them succeed.” Brian Ellerman, Forge’s first managing director. “TCoG is one of our newest community partners, offering onsite mentoring and other resources.”
More events to come
Other Thursday FORGE events throughout January focus on local food. These events include his FORGE Fireside interviews with TCoG certified owners. Pueblo Vida Brewing Company and a Curiosity Club presentation on funding food-based businesses.
