Madison, Wisconsin — Wisconsin residents who received unemployment insurance benefits last year must report UI benefits as taxable income on their 2022 tax returns, according to the Workforce Development Administration.
DWD also noted that this year’s 1099-G income tax statements are easily accessible through the UI’s secure online system.
Unemployment benefits such as Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, Mixed Income Unemployment Compensation, Wage Loss Assistance, and Extended Benefits are considered taxable income for both federal and state income taxes. The 1099-G form will show the amount of her UI benefits that the petitioner received during the previous year.
Applicants can go to the 1099-G Tax Information page to access their 1099-G tax return and follow the instructions to obtain an electronic copy of their 2022 benefits payment record.
In response to the trend in customer service towards online self-service convenience, claimants who log on to the UI’s online claimant portal will now have access to their 2022 1099-G statements online, with a paper copy. You are informed that you should not expect it to be mailed. Claimants granted long-term exceptions to the use of online services will receive a 1099-G statement in the mail. DWD will continue to mail paper copies upon request.
DWD will keep the 1099-G form securely online for all claimants to access and print for their records. Statements for the last six years are available online. This is helpful if the claimant needs to file an amended tax return.
