The Apple News app maintained its position as the UK’s most popular news app in December, but its lead over the BBC News app was significantly smaller than in September, according to data from Ipsos iris.
The Apple News app, which comes preloaded on iPhones and comes in free and paid versions (Apple News+), was used by 14.1 million people in December, down 9% from September. About 13 million people use his BBC News app, an increase of 8% since September.
The Apple News app is used by just over a million more people than BBC News, and the margin has shrunk significantly since the Press Gazette last reported this data. Since then, the Apple News app has been used by 3.5 million more people than BBC News.
Only two news apps are used by more than a quarter of the UK 15+ population, the Apple News app reaches 28% of UK 15+ people and the BBC app reaches 26%. increase.

Aggregators are less popular among UK news consumers
Of the 24 news apps in the ranking, only eight aggregators were Google News (2.3 million viewers) and AOL (1.1 million users), the highest ranked news curators behind Apple News and Upday. The remaining 16 apps in the ranking were linked to a single news brand and included legacy publisher apps that featured particularly strongly on the list.
A number of single-branded news apps that featured in the previous ranking in September did not appear in this month’s list as they fell out of Ipsos’ list of the UK’s top 1,000 apps. Those included the GB News app, Wales Online and Liverpool Echo.
The Manchester Evening News app (#24 with 165,185 users) is the only regional news brand app featured in this quarter’s rankings.
The fastest growing app since our last ranking in September was Reach’s local news aggregator In Your Area (726,713 million viewers, up 31% compared to September). This was followed by Flipboard (213,915 users, up 26%) and Huffpost (278,311 users, up 16%).
UK news app engagement: Mail Online had the highest average time per user
The Mail Online app had the highest average dwell time per user (531 minutes). Times and Sunday Times followed (398 minutes).
Although it only ranked ninth for time spent per user, the BBC News app was the most engaged app by total time spent (1.7 billion minutes), fueled by its large reach. Apple News ranked him second in total time spent (1.4 billion minutes), which is also related to audience size.
UK sports news apps ranked: BBC Sports Top
The BBC Sports app was the top sports app by viewership in December (4.49 million users), well ahead of the second best sports app, the Premier League (1.69 million users). The Sky Sports app has him close to number three with 1.66 million users.
While many users rely on sports apps to stream games and sporting events, in our view we have included any app that provides reasonable sports journalism.
Ipsos iris will replace Comscore as the industry-accepted data standard in 2021. Part of the Ipsos iris data comes from his panel of 10,000 people aged 15 and over and is designed to be nationally representative. Participants have installed meters on 25,000 personal devices to passively measure website and app usage.
This data is combined with data from participating websites that are tagged so that every device that visits the site can be identified and logged.
