A Ugandan court on Tuesday remanded an American couple charged with child trafficking.
Nicholas Spencer and his wife, Mackenzie Lee Spencer, allegedly tortured a 10-year-old boy and held him undressed in a small, cold room from 2020 to 2022, state officials said. According to an indictment filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in December 2022:
According to the couple’s attorney, David Mpanga, they are scheduled to return to court on February 2 to hear the progress of the state’s investigation.
“Since it has been postponed to February 2nd, I am here to hear the status of the investigation and when it will be ready for appeal to the High Court,” Moanga said.
He added, “They are being charged with aggravated trafficking and aggravated torture. Because aggravated trafficking charges can only be tried in the High Court, today’s case is a matter for the court to monitor the progress of the investigation and It was to decide when the state was ready to go to the High Court.”
The boy, one of the couple’s three adopted children, arrived in Uganda in 2017 and volunteered at a U.S.-based nonprofit in the town of Jinja before moving to work for a start-up. I moved to Naguru, an upscale residential area on the outskirts of Kampala.
