For the eleventh year in a row, ABC News’ World News Tonight has spotlighted small businesses nationwide that make and sell American-made products in their annual Made in America Christmas series.
From personalized books to Christmas tree grow kits, David Muir reports on the small businesses in the United States that are creating products and jobs. For the third year in a row, Oprah’s Winfrey has joined the fun by sharing her favorite things made in America.
All of the companies featured said their business improved after viewing, and said viewer orders made a big difference in their sales.
Buck Mason, a company that sells t-shirts made from cotton from farms around the country, sold more than 3,400 shirts after Muir visited the store in New York.
Based in Mystic, Connecticut, Mystic Knotwork has racked up over $40,000 in sales within an hour of appearing on the series. “I got a call. It was crazy,” said employee Baillie McGoen.
Nomadic Kitchen, Alex Schumann’s company in Burlington, Vermont, makes flavorful, holiday-themed marshmallows. Due to the increase in orders, Schumann said he increased staff hours and days and hired new employees to meet the high demand.
In Gardena, California, Gloria L. Williams’ beauty company Body Nanny (which was on Oprah’s list of favorite things) received hundreds of new orders for its sugar scrub set.
“You’ve kept us very busy,” Williams told Muir in a video message.
Another item on Oprah’s list was the Movie Night Trio popcorn box from Stone Hollow Farmstead. Mother-daughter duo Deborah and Alexander Her Stone made her 500 new boxes for injured “World News Tonight” viewers in Harpersville, Alabama.
Philadelphia-based company Vinylux repurposes old vinyl records into bowls, coasters, journals, watches and more. Once they shared the story with Muir, sales increased by 1,600% and sold out. The owner, Jeff Davis, and his team quickly got to work restocking the inventory. “It’s been a very busy week here, but it’s been great,” said Davis.
The nonprofit Augusta Training Shop sells wooden snowflakes handmade by adults with disabilities. Executive Director Audrey Murrell said the organization will be able to hire more employees after being in the spotlight.
