Papoose’s job is to lead TuneCore’s Hip-Hop and Rap Artist Ambassador Program, according to a statement released by the company. He also advises on new talent discovery, artist education and careers.
He reports directly to the company’s CEO, Andrea Gleeson, who marvels at his knowledge of the hip-hop industry.
“When we hire executives, we look for expertise and experience,” Gleason says. “Papoose’s years of struggle and success in the industry have made him uniquely qualified to advise hip-hop artists because he stands by them and knows what they are going through. Because we understand what’s going on and we know first-hand what works.”
As an up-and-coming artist, Papoose made a name for himself with his prolific freestyle skills during the 90’s mixtape era. From there, he gained notoriety among his peers and the industry alike. He signed a $1 million record deal under the late DJ Kay Slay in the 2000s, but eventually regained his independence. Since then, he has championed artist ownership and creative control.
By adopting Papoose, TuneCore’s goal is to increase the value of self-release artists and expand educational programs that benefit and inspire all independent artists. In addition to his position, the 44-year-old rapper has announced that he will be releasing a new single, “Makin Plays,” featuring Jim His Jones and Jaque on February 10.
