Donald Trump has made a formal request to be allowed back on Facebook, his campaign said Wednesday, calling on “presidential candidates not to be silenced.”
A lawyer for the former US president has sent a letter to the platform’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, asking for a “meeting to discuss expedited re-entry” of Donald Trump on social networks.
“We believe the suspension of President Trump’s Facebook account fundamentally distorts and restricts public discourse,” Scott Gust claimed in a letter dated Tuesday.
He urged the platform to “promote real dialogue, not silence presidential candidates.”
The former Republican leader had been suspended from social networks for two years after an attack carried out by his supporters against the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Facebook said Donald Trump would be “a risk to public safety” gone.
Asked by AFP on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the network’s parent company Meta promised a decision on the former president’s fate “in the coming weeks.”
Donald Trump had already returned to Twitter on November 19, 2022, four days after declaring his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.
He hasn’t posted to that account yet, but communicates primarily through his own platform, Truth Social.
