On this day in 1989, Bay Area rap legend Too $hort released his second album. life is too short On the legendary, but now defunct Jive/RCA imprint.
Not long after $hort retired from selling thousands of units out of the trunk of his car, his fifth full-length studio release became the best-selling album of all time. Even after releasing more than 20 albums, Too $hort’s most successful LP is this 10 of his tracks that interweaves creative arrangements of curse words with a crash course in his game of pimping. It was a gem. Tracks like “Pimp the Ho” and “Don’t Fight The Feelin'” are educational for those outside of Oakland unfamiliar with $hort, while songs like “Cusswords” and the title track are ” It radiates ‘American hood’ charm, and many could relate to it across the country during the crack era.
Thanks to the Bay Area vet for pulling it off in Northern California when there weren’t many famous rappers outside of New York in the first place. A tribute to this piece of hip-hop history!
