Ginny and I seem to have attended more parties this holiday season than any other time of year. Everyone is catching up on the parties they’ve missed over the years.
Christmas and New Year fall on weekends this year, so as a boss, I had the opportunity to joke that we don’t need holidays. I love playing the old-fashioned boss role. I care about productivity, not where you sit.

Life goes on and now we face a new crisis. A real war in Europe between Russia and the West. We will get through this too.
With covid gone, I decided it was time to lose ‘covid 19’. This refers to a 19-pound gain from sitting around the house eating, drinking and watching TV while sheltering at home.
To tell you the truth, Ginny and I didn’t evacuate much. Other than the government restrictions we had to work around, there were no major changes in our lifestyle.
I know several couples who have had severe covid incompatibilities. One of the spouses would want lockdown. Other spouses could care less. This is a marital discord most couples never thought about when they got engaged.
I got covid once. One day it hit me like a brick and the next it was gone. Two years later, when Covid-19 subsided, I was the sickest I have ever been. In fact, I was afraid I would never get better. The test was negative, but I was convinced it was related to the novel coronavirus. But I am alive and well now.
So on New Year’s Day, I’m joining the hordes of Americans whose number one solution is to lose weight.
Having started a new diet a few months ago, I’m actually ahead of my game.
Previously, I was a strong believer in one-day fasting. He fasts one day a week to maintain his weight. I fast 2 days a week to lose weight. It worked.
But now I’m older and have less willpower and strength. Fasting takes a toll on your body. So, at 64, I’m actually trying to diet the right way. That means counting calories, exercising moderately, and losing weight in the long run.
I have to admit it works. Why have I never tried to do this before?
Here’s how it works: First, weigh yourself every morning. Every Monday, adjust for daily variation and calculate your average weight for the 7 days.
At the same time, I count my calories minus my resting metabolism and exercise to calculate how much weight I should lose that week. So far I have lost 4 pounds in 6 weeks.
There are no restrictions on what I eat. Calories are calories, calories are calories. Diets are generally uncomfortable, and I try to offset that discomfort by maximizing the emphasis on pleasure per calorie.
I don’t use apps because I want control. I used a simple notepad on my smartphone to write down everything I ate and estimate the calories. I bought a scale and a measuring cup, but didn’t really need it. After a while, you get pretty good at estimating calories in anything.
For what I consume each day, I have a pre-set list of calorie counts to save time.
The same goes for exercise. There are excellent internet tools for estimating calorie burn. He found that walking 18 holes of golf burns 1,700 calories at about half a pound. I love golf so this works really well for me.
In fact, we’re not eating too much, we’re not exercising enough to drive anywhere. you won’t gain weight. Treadmills and walking are excellent in this regard.
So far I’m on target. In his first five weeks, he lost exactly the amount that calorie counting predicted.
However, this does not last long. your body adapts. So you should take it easy. lose a little become flat. Get your body in shape. And keep an eye on your calories. In the end, the percentage of excess calories per day is exactly the percentage above his normal BMI.
