These new Apple apps replace iTunes on Windows

In 2019, Apple replaced the long-standing iTunes application on the Mac with new dedicated Music, Podcasts, and TV apps (and new features in the Finder). Windows users are still using iTunes, but not for very long.

In October 2022, Apple confirmed that dedicated applications for Apple TV and Apple Music would come to Windows in 2023, with preview versions listed in the Microsoft Store.

The new Apple Music for Windows looks a lot like the Mac app, with support for music streaming and local library management. With the Apple TV app, you can watch movies and shows from Apple TV+, as well as content purchased from iTunes/Apple TV. There’s also a third app called Apple Devices that lets you sync, update, backup, or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod.

Each application requires Windows 11 version 22621.0 or later (recent update to Windows 11 22H2 upgrade). It’s not clear if the final release of the app will work on older Windows versions. If not, iTunes may still be left for users running Windows 10. Lenovo ThinkPad X13s Snapdragon and ARM Surface Pro 9.

Apple’s software for Windows has historically terribleGiven that Apple has already replaced iTunes on the Mac, the final release of its new Windows app could mark the end of its 22-year-old music program. We’ll have to wait and see what Apple plans for older Windows PCs — iTunes has already finished updating Windows 7 and 8.1 in 2020.
