MIWLAUKEE — Little Birdie told us there’s something new at the Milwaukee County Zoo.
A baby gentoo penguin hatched at the zoo on December 17, the zoo announced Thursday.
The yet-to-be-named chick was born to parents Fiona and Oscar. A team of veterinarians at the Milwaukee County Zoo determine the sex of baby penguins from 1 to 3 months of age from blood samples.
The chick is also growing quickly. He was 107 grams when he was born and by December 21st he was 200 grams.
Guests can now visit the zoo’s ‘Aviary’ near the ‘Seal and Sea Lion Show’ to watch the chicks continue to grow over the next few days. The zoo said later this month the baby penguins will be removed from display for “fledding”. In the meantime, keepers teach them how to eat themselves and work on other training. The zoo plans to show the penguin babies to the public in about four to six weeks. That’s about the same time that its waterproof feathers also grow.
Gentoo penguins are “curious and active birds” that live in Antarctica. They are considered “stable” in the wild. A keeper at the Milwaukee County Zoo said Gentoo is “always up to something” and is excited to welcome him home.
