From Bill Shaikin and Mike DiGiovanna: Arte Moreno has decided not to sell the Angels.
On Monday, five months after selling the team, Moreno announced he would retain ownership. Potential buyers have been reviewing the team’s finances and visiting the stadium, with the first bids due next month.
In a statement, Moreno said, “This process has made it clear that we have unfinished business and we feel we can positively impact the future of the team and the fan experience.” The offseason promised a franchise-record player salary, but we want to reach our goal of bringing the World Series Championship back to the fans.”
In August, Moreno announced that he had hired an investment banker, saying that while he did not go so far as to make an unconditional commitment to sell, the process should begin. said in a statement.
It is not unheard of for an owner to place a bid and then decide not to sell because the bid was insufficient. In this case, the Angels are projected to sell for a record price for his franchise in Major League Baseball (at least $2.5 billion), and Moreno decided last week to simply call off the sale without placing a bid. With the Angels beefing up their roster this winter, Moreno is said to be feeling good again about retaining ownership.
