GREENFIELD — Thanks to old and new partnerships established between the Franklin County Community Meal Program and businesses, vans transporting food to people across the county will continue to be possible.

“Our business partners are a huge part of the foundation of what we do,” said Rachel Bergren, executive director of the Franklin County Community Meal Program. “We feel very supported by the community, especially by companies that value giving back to the community.”

The Franklin County Community Meal Program has transported hundreds of thousands of pounds of food throughout the county and served thousands through four free community meal sites in Greenfield, Orange, Turners Falls and Northfield, the Orange Food Pantry and Turners Falls Mobile Food. In 2021, with a $60,000 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs, the nonprofit purchased its first refrigerated truck. But with operating costs rising, nonprofits turned to the business community for help to cover operating costs such as fuel, insurance and general maintenance.

With Refrigerated Vehicles, the Franklin County Community Meal Program has expanded its access to food efforts and developed a delivery program through the Orange Food Pantry to ensure fresh food for those without transportation and unable to leave their homes. Transit Van’s business sponsors include Greenfield Savings Bank, McGovern Automotive Group, Greenfield Cooperative Bank, Covestro LLC, Pete’s Tire Barn, Ramon Financial Services and C&S Wholesale Grocers. McGovern is one of the newest business sponsors after Dillon Chevrolet. As the van traverses the county, the logos of these companies can be seen displayed alongside the logos of the program’s bread baskets.

Berggren says the ability to transport food throughout Franklin County is due to the generosity of volunteers who donate their time to bring food to those in need.

“We are proud to let the community know that we cannot do this alone,” said Berggren. “We are here to build community strength and resources. To do that, we need to do this together.”

Public Schools Hosting Recruitment Fairs
