BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (WAFB) – Whether it’s World Cup soccer or the NFL, many fans of many sports want to watch a game from the comfort of their couch. But what if you can’t get the channel or network your game is on? Some fans turn to free online sports streams. But as Consumer Reports explains, some of these free streams can cause major problems for fans.
A hardcore sports fan will do anything to see a game. If you don’t have the right channels to get the game, you may resort to his stream of free sports. These unauthorized streams are pirated versions of copyrighted sporting events, just search for them on Google.
Looking at them may seem harmless, but Consumer Reports says you’re betting your online privacy and security. Various problems can occur, including malware and viruses.
Malware can do everything from locking you out of your computer until you pay a ransom to searching your files for bank account passwords.
When you visit one of these websites, it may silently download files to your computer in the background. And basically, that’s all it takes.
These websites may also contain questionable content and tons of advertisements. So what if you don’t want to miss the big game?CR says he’ll consider cable exchange services like his FuboTV, Sling TV, and YouTube TV, which offer many sports channels.
Some games are also legally streamed on services like Apple TV, Peacock and Prime Video. In many cases, you can sign up for a free trial and cancel at any time.
Consumer Reports neither encourages nor condones the use of unlicensed free streams, but says that if you do so anyway, use your mobile device instead of your computer to reduce the risk of getting infected with malware.
If you use a computer, make sure it is updated with the latest operating system and security patches. And use an ad blocker.
Also, CR says indoor antennas are a great way to get access to major broadcast networks and others.
If you live near your local TV tower, you can watch the channel for free.
