Google Play has gone to great lengths to protect Android users from low-quality apps and make it easier to find high-quality apps. First, there was a set of new policies to regulate app developers, followed by a new app monitoring system introduced last November. But despite all our efforts, the number of poor quality apps continues to grow.
According to data presented by Sports Lens, the number of low-quality apps on the Google Play store jumped by 80,000 last year, surpassing 1 million last week.
Over 12,000 new low-quality apps since November despite new monitoring system
Google’s new app monitoring system, launched on November 30, 2022, will make it easier for you to find high-quality apps. This means that high-quality apps will stand out more. In contrast, low-quality apps, such as those with a user-perceived crash rate greater than 1.09% or a user-perceived his ANR rate of 0.47%, are excluded from recommendations.
Even before this new system, thousands of low-quality and policy-violating apps were regularly removed from Google’s play store. However, despite all measures and efforts, the number of low-quality Android apps continues to grow.
According to AppBrain data, the number of low-quality apps on the Google Play store jumped 8% year-over-year, from about 930,000 in January 2022 to over 1 million last week. Statistics show that last year he had the highest number of new low-quality apps in March and April, with 11,000 and 12,000 respectively. However, all other months in 2022 also saw four-digit increases.
Interestingly, the number has continued to grow since November, when the Google Play store announced a new app monitoring system. In November alone, he saw a drop of 8,800, while the following month saw nearly the same number of low-quality apps on Google Play. According to AppBrain data, in the last two months he had over 12,000 new low-quality apps on Google Play. This represents 15% of the total year-on-year increase.

Over the years, Google has significantly reduced the number of apps available on the Play Store due to stricter regulatory policies. In 2020, Android users can choose from her 2.9 million apps. By the end of 2021, this number has dropped to his 2.7 million and continues to decline.
The number of apps available in January 2022 will be 2.64 million, marking a significant decline of 260,000 in two years. Statistics show that the total number of available Google Play apps has grown by about 50,000 since then, reaching 2.69 million last week. Regular apps make up 62% of that number, and low-quality apps make up the remaining 38%.
