MADISON, Wisconsin — The Memphis Police Department released a disturbing video last week that showed driver Tire Nichols being beaten, kicked and pepper sprayed by officers.
Five officers have been fired and are now charged in Nichols’ death.A sixth officer has been reprimanded.
Madison Police Chief Sean Barnes called it a setback in his department because so many saw Memphis police officers in action on their television screens Friday night.
“Since 2020, we’ve been doing a great job of reconnecting with our community, and when these incidents happen, we’re really set back a little bit,” Barnes said.
Protesters were in Madison on Sunday. Barnes says this is just one example of how much more work needs to be done.
“We are committed to having a transparent police department and know that trust is built with every call, every interaction,” Barnes explained.
