To celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, The Museum at FIT (MFIT) is hosting a new exhibition. Fresh, Fly, Fabulous: 50 Years of Hip-Hop Style It will take place from February 8, 2023 to April 23, 2023.
According to a press release, Showcase will be “the largest and most comprehensive exhibition to explore this innovative and influential style.” The exhibition includes over 100 garments and accessories highlighting hip-hop’s undeniable influence on the evolution of fashion.
The exhibition is curated by Elena Romero, a journalist and Assistant Professor of Marketing Communications at FIT, and Elizabeth Way, Associate Curator of Costumes at MFIT.formerly they performed black fashion designer (2016), fashion fabric (2018) and head to toe (2021) at the museum.
Items such as Dapper Dan’s customized jacket, Kangol’s hat, and Manolo Blahnik’s Timberland-inspired booties are all on display. Also featured are memorable outfits worn by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, LL Cool J, Chuck D, Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, DJ Khaled, Lil Nas X and Cardi B.

Accompanying the exhibition is a book of the same name published by Rizzoli, foreworded by the legendary Slick Rick.
On February 24, 2023, there will be a free symposium on the exhibition open to the public.
