This mother-daughter duo from Ukrul will be an inspiration and role model for young entrepreneurs to follow. Her ten-plus years of perseverance and struggle with them finally paid off.
Soyam Foods, run and managed by mother Angela Shimray and daughter Soyamphi from Lungshang village, Ukhrul district of Manipur, inaugurated the Soyam Products Workshop in Phungreitang, Ukhrul on Saturday. It also launched a new product called ‘Sachao’, a traditional snack made from sesame seeds, black rice, salt and chili peppers.
Officially unveiled by DIC Ukhrul General Manager Themreiyo T Awungshi, the workshop has been constructed with funding from the State Bank of India under the Pradhan Mantri Micro Food Processing Enterprise (PMFME) scheme.
“With a view to enhancing the competitiveness of existing individual micro-enterprises in the unorganized segment of the food processing industry and promoting the formalization of the sector, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), under Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan We have started the PMFME scheme.” said Themreiyo T Awungshi.
Management of Soyam Foods Angela said: The initial stage was funded by the Ukhrul District Women Institute of Micro Credit (UDWIM) through a special package. Thus, with the help of UDCRMS and her UDWIM, we started a small enterprise. “
She added: Through this scheme we were able to build a workshed and procure machinery. We are very grateful to everyone who has provided their services to make this dream possible. I hope and believe in “
After accumulating experience through food processing training and food shows, the two of them finally launched their own products into the world.
UDWIM Director Ringyuichon Vashum praised Angela for her initiative and perseverance in achieving her goals. She said, “Angela has been very supportive, active and conscientious in her work. Her sacrifice and endurance are worthy of emulation by all.”
The president of Tangkhul Shanao Long Thingreiphy Lungharwoshi said, “Achon Angela is an entrepreneurial role model for women in Tangkhul.” She appealed to the rally to support local entrepreneurs by purchasing their products.

Soyam Foods’ products include fruit juices such as Prunus napaulensis, plum, wild apple, kiwi, mango, lemon and gooseberry, as well as candies made from fruits found in the Uhururu hills.
