Milwaukee — The current Marquette basketball team is notable. Head coach Shaka Smart is doing a great job.
The Golden Eagles are fun to watch. they play very hard. They’ve also won most of the time, as they did Wednesday night against Providence at the Fiserv Forum.
The game marked Marquette’s 2003 Final Four team reunion and the 20th anniversary of his appearance in New Orleans.
It was a wonderful evening and everywhere we looked we felt like we had stepped back in time. There’s the big Rob Jackson, the Milwaukee kid who brought power. Brown Deer’s Steve Novak. As he became known for his NBA TV shows, he’ll never forget what he meant on Marquette’s show.
Of course, there was Travis Diener from Fond du Lac. When I asked him what that night meant, he simply said: “It means everything.”
Coach Tom Crean, who shaped them, was also there. He was still the leader who united them before going on court for the halftime ceremony.
Crean ruffled some feathers as he left for Indiana. But he felt love Wednesday night. In my opinion, Marquette wouldn’t be in the Big East without him.
Of course, the loudest applause was for Dwyane Wade. He was a blossoming star with Marquette and a huge talent that earned him three of his NBA titles in Miami. When I asked him what was so special about the night, the first thing he said was, “It was about the team and the fans.”
A lot has happened since 2003. We returned one night. It was a wonderful trip.
