“He cared more about our business than we did,” Shepard said.
They say Mateen was a godsend, joining their team alongside his brother and cousin shortly after they opened and pouring his heart and soul into their vision.
“He was a great person and had a great spirit. He was selfless… I learned from him,” Shanika said.
The Shepherds describe Mateen as a bright and dependable manager, a loving wife and father of three children. They said they were on vacation and left to run her shop when they received a text from Mateen that her car had been stolen.
“He texted us in the morning that his car was stolen and to pray for him,” Jomar said.
Shepard recalled Saturday morning when Mateen was looking for a stolen car in the McDonald’s parking lot outside South High Street.
“He was going to work and knew he didn’t have a car, so he left home early and took his niece,” says Jomar.
Police records show that Mateen was shot while trying to retrieve the car and later died at a local hospital.
Police have released photos of two men and a woman believed to be involved. The Shepards hope the suspect will come forward and face the consequences of taking the life of a dear friend.
“I can’t even imagine what his life is like, let alone his children and family,” Shanika said.
We want justice for him and his family,” Jomar said. “The community is heartbroken. So are we.”
Sheppards created a GoFundMe page to support Mateen’s family.
