This weekend honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be significant for the more than 20 Tempe entrepreneurs.
Tempe Mayor Corey Woods announced the 27 recipients of Tempe’s BIPOC micro-manufacturing grants at the MLK Diversity Awards Breakfast on January 9.
“Helping people thrive is just one of the benefits of this program. Investing in Tempe entrepreneurs is a way to invest in the city’s future economic growth. and services, new ideas and even new jobs,” said Woods.
According to the city’s announcement, 11% of the nation’s businesses are owned by people of color.
Recognizing the need to increase the numbers, Tempe officials secured $300,000 and partnered with Rep. Greg Stanton of districts containing Tempe to secure $500,000 in federal funding.
The $800,000 fund will provide scholarships of up to $25,000 to BIPOC-owned businesses, which can be used for rent, supplies, tools and other “things they need to succeed,” the release said. . They also receive membership in the Tempe Chamber of Commerce.
